POLISHING BORES & CYLINDERS

YOUR FINISHING PROCESS JUST GOT EASIER

Overview

Finishing hardened tool steels presents a significant challenge in the metalworking industry due to the material’s high strength, wear resistance, and reduced machinability after heat treatment. These steels are commonly used in demanding applications such as molds, dies, cutting tools, and precision wear components—where achieving a fine surface finish is critical to performance and durability. Polishing hardened steel cylinders, in particular, is essential to ensure proper fit, seal, lubrication retention, and resistance to friction and fatigue in high-stress environments.

FLEX-HONE® tools are highly effective for achieving a uniform surface roughness (Ra) and finishing hardened materials due to their flexible filament and abrasive globule design that conforms to bore geometry without altering part dimensions. When equipped with advanced abrasives such as boron carbide, FLEX-HONE® tools can efficiently finish medium to high carbon steels up to 50 Rc. Diamond and CBN abrasives are reliable solutions for hardened steels and other tough alloys and are available up to 2500 mesh grit to achieve finer, single digit Ra finishes. The result is a plateaued, polished surface that improves part performance and longevity in even the most demanding environments.

TACKLING HARDER MATERIALS

FLEX-HONE® tools address the challenges of finishing hardened tool steels by using different abrasive types such as Boron Carbide, CBN and Diamond to more effectively cut through high-hardness materials without generating excessive heat or altering critical dimensions. Their self-centering design ensures a consistent, refined surface finish while preserving tight tolerances.

Polishing Hardened Steel Cylinder Applications

  • Injection Mold Cavities and Cores Requires ultra-smooth finishes to ensure easy part release and avoid surface defects in molded products.
  • Hydraulic Valve Sleeves and Spools Demands tight sealing and smooth movement, where polished surfaces prevent internal leakage and wear.
  • Tooling and Die Components Polished dies and punches minimize material adhesion, galling, and premature tool failure.
  • Precision Spindles and Mandrels Smooth, hardened cylindrical surfaces improve balance, rotation accuracy, and bearing life.
  • Wear-Resistant Bushings and Sleeves Hardened cylinders in high-cycle applications benefit from fine finishes to reduce friction and material degradation.
